State Assistance Continues to Pave Way for New Technical Center

May 16, 2006 – Lansing, MI - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the Toyota Technical Center (TTC) expansion in York Township is moving forward as a result of brownfield redevelopment assistance from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The project is expected to involve $150 million in capital investment and create more than 670 jobs in the state, including 400 directly by the company.
"The Toyota Technical Center expansion is a result of our aggressive strategy to attract new investment and jobs to Michigan from the world's most innovative companies," Granholm said. "Toyota's continued investment in our state demonstrates once again that Michigan is the global center for automotive research and design."

Toyota will use a brownfield Single Business Tax credit worth $5 million to demolish existing buildings and prepare the former site of the Ypsilanti Psychiatric Hospital for its state-of-the-art research and development facility.

"We are very appreciative for the strong support from Governor Granholm and the MEDC as Toyota expands our engineering and R&D operations in York Township," Toyota Technical Center President Yasuhiko Ichihashi said. "Southeast Michigan provides the best access to suppliers and engineering resources. It serves as the hub for North American automotive engineering and R&D. Toyota's increasing engineering presence reflects Michigan's strategic importance for our business."

Last April, the MEDC approved an incentive package valued at more than $38.9 million to convince TTC to expand its new R&D facility in Michigan instead of a competing site in another state. The Governor collaborated with the state Legislature to convey approximately 700 acres of state land to Toyota for the project. The completion of the land sale was announced earlier this month.

"Michigan's innovative economic development programs are the envy of the rest of the country," MEDC President and CEO James C. Epolito said. "This project will jump-start new life into a dormant piece of property and return it to a revenue-generating asset for the community."

Toyota Technical Center was established in 1977 and has 650 Michigan employees. TTC is responsible for advanced research, engineering, and vehicle development for Toyota vehicles manufactured in North America.

"We are thrilled to have a company with the reputation Toyota enjoys to locate their facility in our Township," York Township Supervisor Joe Zurawski said. "This will be a very aesthetically-attractive facility and an asset for the entire region. It will also create several hundred high-quality jobs that are sorely needed."

The Toyota brownfield redevelopment is one of three economic development projects the Governor announced today. In all, they are expected to create and retain a total of 2,983 Michigan jobs.

In her 2006 State of the State address, Granholm emphasized the importance of making Michigan a global economic powerhouse in the 21st century. Since January 2005, the Governor and the MEDC have announced the creation or retention of more than 85,000 jobs as a result of targeted assistance provided by the MEDC.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation, a partnership between the state and local communities, promotes smart economic growth by developing strategies and providing services to create and retain good jobs and a high quality of life.
